This section is next to York Railway Station. In Victorian times the trains would come in under these arches to the station which was then to the right within the walls (the Victorians built these arches into the wall to allow this). Nowadays the trains do not do this anymore instead the station is to the left of this picture and avoids the city walls altogether.

To the bottom of this picture, taken from the walls, is all that remains of the old way the rails used to go - an old signal box. Up towards the top right is the modern York Station and top left Queen Street. Victorian railway tracks used to run under this road and through the arches in the wall here to the left of the picture.
